It constantly sends me notifications that it is going to sleep and when it's asleep I cannot access it to update any settings. It will work good for a day and then disconnects from the network and I have to reset the camera to get it to reconnect. Then I couldn't get it to connect and had to uninstall the app and reinstall the app to get it to re-add the device, worked for a day and then disconnected again. | 2024-06-19 | 2.0 | Worked great for a day | The pros:I was really excited about receiving this camera, and even more excited when I was actually able to get it connected to the wifi and control it through both the PC and phone apps. I was thrilled it actually had a PC app. It is the first wifi cam I've actually been able to get connected on the network. Huge plus for me there. The problem is it won't stay connected. It drops every minute or so unless you're actively engaging the camera through the app. The apps can wake it up, which is nice, but not if you've left it sit for too long. Then you'll get a 'time out' error code. It keeps going to sleep and disconnecting from the wifi.It had a very nice image quality, although I couldn't find any information on the frame rate and it looked a bit choppy at times.The cons:The battery life wasn't very long. You get maybe a few hours before it dies and needs recharged. The charging cord is unstable in the port and not always connecting. It's difficult to tell when it's charging if the battery is completely dead. You need a dark place to see the tiny indicator light hiding under the silicone leak barrier.I do have one minor complaint with the design, and that is the power button is really difficult to access. I can only depress it with a fingernail. You can't easily depress it sideways because it's too close to the edges of the compartment and my fingernail centers just to the side of the button. Nope. Not going to work. If you do it longwise, same problem, but you do get a mm or two of wiggle room to get your nail centered over the round-topped button so it can slide off the side of it a half second after trying to depress it.I finally settle on using a tool, a pair of scissors. What's more, I have SMALL hands in comparison to your average American, so plan on using a tool to power on and off, or doing the factory reset, because the reset button is positioned exactly the same way on the other side.In the end, the button won the button battle. It just decided to stop responding to my input altogether the first day I had it running. | 2024-06-18 | 2.0 | Not Ready for Prime Time | This review is for the C291 Solar Security Camera.Let me just start by saying that I have quite a bit of experience with security cameras. I currently have 13 cameras from 4 different manufacturers hooked up to an NVR system. I can usually get any camera up and running without needing to use their instructions. This camera is a royal pain to work with.It took me 3 tries to get it connected to my network. I did the setup about 6 feet from my router so signal strength was not an issue. There is little to no information on using the app. There are lots of settings but you have to go to each one and try to figure them out. Some of the icon symbols are hard to figure out and you just have to click on them to figure them out.My biggest complaint is connectivity. I would loose connection for no reason at all and I'm no more than 6 feet from the router. Eventually, I had to delete the device from the app and had to start over. Unfortunately, when you try to add the device again, it never goes through the Bluetooth connection portion of the setup and the setup fails. What I had to do was delete the app completely from my phone, install it again and then it would connect.This camera is not a good choice for the average consumer. Even if you have good technical experience, it's still a pain to deal with. All I need to do is decide where I will place it. | 2024-06-11 | 2.0 | Has a mind of its own and doesn't want anybody to control it | To preface my review, I have numerous Arlo cameras, more than half of which are powered with solar panels. With that, I thought I would mix it up and add a different camera to my security collection.This camera appears to have it all, so much potential. But the last two days I've been struggling with figuring out all the settings, how to keep it from going offline/online at will, and no clear guidance or weblink that works. It's like navigating without a compass.To start- you MUST have a modem/router that supports 2.4GHz Wi-Fi networks. If you have 5GHz without the option to use 2.4, then this will not work. Getting it online took a couple trial and error attempts. The software walked me through it but I had to troubleshoot and remove the device then reinstall to get it to work. After that, it was all about configuring the settings to meet my needs. This is where the real problems started...- It goes online/offline at random. At first I attributed this to motion detection so I pointed it to the wall where it would not detect motion.- Light was going on at random. I could not interpret the light settings from the menu so it's all trial and error.- I set it up for push notifications but could not set it to specifically notify me or human motion. It would send me dozens of sleep notifications. And a couple other notifications that I could not figure out what they meant.- If I tried to configure the settings and the camera was offline, it would not allow me to go into that menu. Most cameras will do change settings unless you are connected and online. But this one would just go offline randomly, then back online. Once again, the camera was sitting on a counter facing the wall so no activity could be attributed to this phenomena.- So many settings and no explanation as to what each setting means. (see screenshot photos).- The first setting "create password" is listed exactly like that, no capitalization. The rest capitalize the first letter of the first word, and randomly capitalize the rest (see photos). Of course this does not affect the function, but it tells me that the Quality Assurance department sucks. Did their software/tech crew fail elementary school English & Grammar?This could work if there were better instructions, online or in the paperwork, that comes with the camera. But the paperwork only has QR codes and a couple basic instructions. The QR code links do not take you to what you may be looking for. They will take you to a menagerie of links for various models and model 291 is not one of them- hope you like playing Where's Waldo. Furthermore, the QR code on the camera housing does not work- you get the "cannot find the page" warning. That QR code is essential for connecting to your wifi (per instructions) if it does not connect automatically.Based on the online/offline ping-pong alone, I cannot trust this camera to do its job. Maybe it is in need of a firmware upgrade. But wouldn't you know it, that's the one setting that doesn't exist in the menu of 19 settings! It barely gets a second star, and it's a stretch to justify that. Like I said, it has potential. I currently have 13 cameras from 4 different manufacturers hooked up to an NVR system. I can usually get any camera up and running without needing to use their instructions. This camera is a royal pain to work with.It took me 3 tries to get it connected to my network. I did the setup about 6 feet from my router so signal strength was not an issue. There is little to no information on using the app. There are lots of settings but you have to go to each one and try to figure them out. Some of the icon symbols are hard to figure out and you just have to click on them to figure them out.My biggest complaint is connectivity. I would loose connection for no reason at all and I'm no more than 6 feet from the router. Eventually, I had to delete the device from the app and had to start over. Unfortunately, when you try to add the device again, it never goes through the Bluetooth connection portion of the setup and the setup fails. What I had to do was delete the app completely from my phone, install it again and then it would connect.This camera is not a good choice for the average consumer. Even if you have good technical experience, it's still a pain to deal with. Until they get their instructions written more clearly and provide the needed information for the various settings on the camera app, I can't recommend this camera. | This review is for the C291 Solar Security Camera.UPDATED: 7/5/24: I more or less have the camera working. All the functions are working. However, there is one function that is not consistent enough for me. To get the most battery life, you want to select the \sleep\ function so the camera is not using much power in this state. When it detects movement, it wakes up and starts operating. There are 2 problems with this. One, it can take from 30 seconds to 2 minutes for it to get reconnected to your Wifi. That doesn't really work for me. Too much can be missed during that period. And two, it does not consistently reconnect. I still get times where the camera won't reconnect. The only way I can really use this camera is to disable the sleep function and have the camera running constantly. In this mode it works fine. However, unless you get enough sun each day, the batteries are going to run down. For me, the only way this camera is useful, is if I've got it plugged into a USB port and have continuous power.
