| 2024-06-25 | 2.0 | For Audio & Music - Great! / For Phone Calls - Horrible! | I used these on an iPhone 12 Pro Max. While I was tempted to get a new set of Echo Buds 2, I wanted to try the Bose QC Earbuds. With there being a $50 discount at the time, I went for it, even after reading some of the mixed reviews. Here is are the positives and the negatives.Positives:- These earbuds fit is fantastic. The supplied silicon ear pieces and "wings" made the fit simple and snug. I could wear them for extended periods and did not experience any pain. They are also very easy to insert into your ears with no problems.- Sounds quality for Audio Sources (except for Phone calls) is amazing. I was very happy with the sound quality and how balanced it sounds. If I was only to use them for listening to Music and Movies (connected to my TV to listen in private), I would keep them. Having compared to the AirPods Pro 2 that I have now, they were better. The APP2 lack some of the highs that were very clean in the Ultras.- The Aware and Quiet modes (ANC) work extremely well. The Echo Buds 2 had a very good ANC and the passthrough was pretty good. On the Bose, the Aware Mode is awesome and the Quiet Mode is fantastic. I could mow the lawn in Quiet Mode and really not hear the tractor.- The Battery Life is very good, they would last the published times without any problems.- Placing the earbuds in the case was very easy and they would not fall out. The magnets that pull them into place are very strong.- Switching between two phones was best accomplished just using the Bluetooth settings from the phone, not the Bose App as is reported to do.Negatives:- Phone Calls are by far the worst of anything that I have ever tried. This is the primary reason that I returned these just before writing this review. The volume for phone calls (only phone) is about 50% or less than the maximum volume of any other audio sources. In other reviews here and other forums, it is the most common complaint by far from all others. My first call was while outside walking and my party could not understand me very well and I could not hear them with Aware Mode or Quiet Mode. I tried a few other calls and they were all bad, with the last one where I needed to switch to the phone from the earbuds where I decided that these were being sent back. I even contacted Bose to see what they would say.- Connection only to one device at a time, is a disappointment. Almost all others support Multi-Point, this was a shortcoming. I did have trouble getting it to connect to an iPad Air 2, not sure if it is the older iPadOS or what. Never got back to solving that.- Case only supports USB-C for charging, not a deal breaker, you would think it would be part of a high-end product.- Support from Bose was very disappointing. I could not find a way to enter a support ticket on their website, was able to make contact through X with DM messages to their support team. They did not answer everything that I wrote and did not address the main issue correctly. I told them that I cannot hear other parties on a phone call, they twice sent me links about getting the microphone positioned better. Not hearing the other party, has nothing to do with the mic. They also sent me a link for over the ear headphones, which was not even the product that I have, they knew that too as they had the Serial Number and referenced what I had.I really wanted these to work, as I like all of my other Bose products. So disappointed that they could not acknowledge that there are reports of Phone Call issues and they are working on it. I might have waited.If you want them for audio, they are great. With these on it sounds like people whispering across the room. My coworkers were impressed when they tried them as well.They're the most comfortable earbuds I've ever owned. Sometimes they just don't connect, only one connects. Sometimes the noise cancellation doesn't turn on and it's stuck in passive mode that's way too loud. These problems sometimes happen, not consistently. I made the mistake of buying their first version of quietcomfort buds, which were more prototype than ready-to-market, oversized and clunky. I figured by this version they should have worked out the bugs, but no.Positives:- The quiet noise-cancelling mode is spectacular, better than any buds I've ever had, and even better than my Sony headphones. People have to tap on my shoulder to get my attention because I won't hear them talking even from a few feet away, albeit while listening to music.- They are more reasonably-sized than the previous version.- The case cover is magnetic close, unlike the previous one that awkwardly required pressing in a small button.Negatives:- This is the major one: As others have mentioned, Bluetooth is fussy and unreliable. Half the time I have to reestablish a link to my iPhone to get it to work at all. Switching between devices can be extremely frustrating. And while listening, once in a while the sound will momentarily get echoey and distorted.- When in the case, the buds are deeply seated and difficult to remove. There's nothing on which to get a firm grip.- This might not be an issue for everyone, and to be fair I have this problem with most buds, but when working out, it's hard to keep them from falling out of my ears, or sometimes even when just sitting. And when I go to push them back in, it's easy to inadvertently turn the sound off or change the quiet setting.I'm only keeping them for the noise cancelling, otherwise I would return them. Bose, you need to fix the bugs before taking your products to market, especially for the price you're charging. When the QC Ultra Earbuds work, they sound amazing, but more often than not, the experience is ruined by the following issues with this product:- SOUND CUTS IN AND OUT RANDOMLY, sometimes so much to the point where they are unusable- Overall, NOT SWEAT RESISTANT- When sweaty, the ear buds would easily fall out- When very sweaty, the sound would become muffled and start popping- When working out, sweat would often drip on the touch sensitive sides, causing music to skip to the next song, pause the music, or activate siri unintentionally (was not an issue with QC1 earbuds)- The right ear bud is poorly seated in the case and would scrape the earbud immediately out of box- The right ear bud would sometimes not charge due to this- Pairing the earbuds with new devices is a complete pain and would often require multiple tries- Connectivity with the Bose app would often disconnect- The over all fit of the earbuds is poor despite the sizing kit, had to buy the extra sizing kit which barely helped. The QC 1s would physically hook into your ear vs with these, the new designed hook is flimsy, which cause the ear buds to fall out much more often- The spatial audio at times would become un-synched and with the sound leaning into one earbud vs the other (probably a gyroscope issue)Overall, the build quality, attention to detail, and functionality of this Bose product do not live up to the Bose quality that I have grown to adore since 2005 with their older QC headphones and acoustimass audio systems. I originally had the Bose QC 1 earbuds for nearly 4 years, which were fantastic compared to these. Sure, they were bulkier, but they worked. I have spoken to several strangers at my gym that I have noticed wearing these ear buds, and they describe similar issues. One of my friends said their QC Ultras completely died after 6 months of use. Bose really needs to step it up if they are asking $230-$300 for this product. I sent the product back to amazon after noticing all of these issues within only several uses, considering how many issues these ear buds have, rendering them essentially unusable. I replaced them with these new QuietComfort earbuds and sadly I don’t love them as I did my original set. The extra features are nice. But, like the QC II, they tend to have phasing issues where there is a delay in each ear for a second or so. A pesky problem that wants to periodically annoy the listener. That problem could potentially be solved with an upgrade to the firmware but Bose refuses to provide it and that's too bad because it could possibly help a lot. The spatial/immersive feature was very difficult to hear. And it is too easy to tap the buds by accident, stopping the player which will not restart by tapping again unless you go directly to the player and restart it that way.Bottom line: The buds sound good and work well but are not much different from the QC II, therefore, they are really not worth the extra cost. Overall they are good buds but too many quirks make them hard to manage, especially when working out or riding in a car. The noise cancelling works about like the 2s but slightly better. If only they didn't cost the premium price. Can recommend but with reservations. My older, very nice, air pod pros had been confiscated by my wife. And at the prompting of a buddy (an audiophile) I bought the Bose QC Ultra ear buds. I'll state up front that the sound is amazing. I can do without the immersion mode, though. It's kind of neat but I can hear a sort of "syntheticness" that takes away from the music. I much preferred "quiet mode". I have no experience with the older Bose earbuds, but suspect you could own a pair of really great, older earbuds at a much better price point.Here are my problems with the Bose QC Ultras. Connection to the iphone is pretty hit and miss. If you can't get it to connect, you can probably sort out the situation in 2 - 10 minutes. But that gets old real fast. I have a 7 year old and can only workout at 5am. Spending 5 minutes in the parking lot trying to connect my ear buds to my phone is infuriating. First world problems, I know, but they cost too much and the nitwits at Bose know full well there is an issue and that it could be better. It wasn't just my phone that had issues. It would randomly disconnect and have issues with my Nvidia shield.The second major issue has to do with volume during calls and online meetings. The volume is SIGNIFICANTLY reduced compared to that of the apple air bud pros. It's just not useable. You cannot make it louder. If you're in a quiet room, fine. But if you're going for a walk or out in public, you are not going to be able to hear. And you can look this up...it's an issue. Again, come on, Bose. You know full well that phone calls need to be louder. Music is plenty loud, so what's going on? Big fail.The 3rd thing is that sometimes, not always, when listening to music you can hear a sort of "sputtering" going on with the music. I can tell you that the ear buds were NOT too far away from the audio source. And the batteries were charged. I typically listen to music through Amazon HD Music. So maybe the issue was on Amazon's end. Maybe.Again, I wanted to love these ear buds. I heard parts and layers in songs I had not heard before. The bass is rich and deep. It's really good. I suspect that if you did NOT use your ear buds for calls and you owned an Android phone, these ear buds might be great. But not if you are an apple user. So I'll sacrifice the audio greatness of the Bose for the pretty great audio quality of the Apple air bud pros (Gen 2). The interfacing with other apple products is just so good. And the Apple air buds do sound great, too.I was also told, but didn't explore this idea, that the Bose app is the problem regarding bluetooth connection. The notion is that if it is removed, an Apple user might not have any connection issues (letting the bluetooth software built into an Apple iOS or computer take over). That wasn't going to work for me because I also own the Bose L1 Pro16 PA system. I have to keep the Bose app on my phone.On a positive note (regarding the Ultras) the comfort is amazing and the battery life is really awesome, too.So that's my experience. Hope this helps. All for trying out any new Bose ear buds that move the ball forward.I googled the issues above and plenty of people were experiencing the same thing. And Bose decided to ignore it. Had Bose wired noise-cancelling earbuds for years and loved them; but these are just miserable to use.(1) Touch controls can't be disabled, which means almost every time you touch them to adjust them in your ear, you'll stop/stop playback, change the volume, and/or jump tracks. Ditto if anything brushes against them (hair, hood, etc). Lots of complaints on the internet, but still no action from Bose to at least allow owners to disable these features.(2) The noise cancelling depends on a proper seal, and the least vibration can break that seal - i.e. when the bus hits a pothole, my audio goes wonky. And yes, I've tried every combination of tips and bands with no improvement. So be ready for frequent background static and the like.(3) Also had regular problems with imbalanced audio - one ear louder than the other - and almost no way to fix it. Ditto sometimes really low audio output no matter what the phone volume was. I tried all the troubleshooting tips on the Bose website, which basically meant I had to delete and re-pair my earbuds every week or so. Sometimes improved things temporarily but never good for any length of time.(4) No idea why *everyone* is going for wireless these days. Radically reduces the battery life on my phone keeping BT on all the time, and regularly struggled with connectivity issues (i.e. various audio inconsistencies when BT struggles). And I'm always worried about losing them - i.e. sleeping on a plane. I wanted to send it in for repairs for something so simple, but they'd stopped making the original QC model in 2023.Thus, I was forced to "upgrade" to the QC Ultras. It was free, since the QCs were still under warranty, and i was excited, expecting to receive a product of equal or greater quality. What i received instead was a barely functional piece of airpod wannabe scrap plastic. They were riddled with nothing but glitches, including an almost constant digital glitchy buzzing noise in one ear. (not very enjoyable if you have sensitive ears) They also had an issue with the immersive audio settings, where sometimes it would glitch and make the audio sound closer to my ears for a split second before going back to normal, it was disorienting. After only 11 days of use, they broke completely, and the right earbud stopped connecting properly to my phone; and when it did, all audio came through muffled as if i were listening to it through a pillow.I sent those ones in for replacement as well, hoping it was just a one-off manufacturing error, and that the new ones would work properly. Having received them only 4 days ago, they function even worse than the last ones did before they broke. Constant connection issues despite following all troubleshooting steps recommended by bose. Sometimes when it disconnects, it makes a loud, disorienting popping noise in the left ear. (again, i have sensitive ears, this is borderline physically painful) and even when they do work "properly," they have the exact same digital buzzing noise in the left ear as the previous pair.If these issues persist, i'm going to send my bose product in for replacement (for the 3rd time!!) in hopes that the new ones will actually work correctly this time, but i doubt it. The QC Ultras have given me more problems in a combined 2 weeks of ownership than the original QCs did over two years. The sound quality is supposed to be really good too. I've actually bought these quietcomfort ultra earbuds twice because I thought my first pair was defective and was holding out hope that they were actually as good as SOME people were saying.However, both purchases have brought me nothing but disappointment, anger, frustration and a truly terrible listening experience. Ive tried all the troubleshooting on both of them but the sound still breaks up every 10 seconds and the sound quality changes literally every time you take them out of the case to listen. You never know how it's going to sound, usually some varying form of unenjoyable. One time, my first pair sounded truly amazing after I did a factory reset but after a few minutes they went back to their usual, very below average sound quality. It is truly a hassle and an annoyance using these earbuds and I hardly use them anymore because of that. Maybe other people have gotten good, functional ones, I can't speak for their experience. But if you're paying $300 dollars, you shouldn't have to guess whether you'll get a functional pair.
