The red base just snaps together with the white base. It doesn’t screw together to create a seal. I am constantly refilling the feeder. Sometimes multiple times in one day. The camera is very sensitive so be prepared for many many notifications. I love the idea of this feeder—but it has been incredibly frustrating. Unfortunately it was a Christmas gift so I didn’t get to use it before the return window closed. I would return this if I could. | 2024-06-14 | 1.0 | Motion detector is too sensitive draining battery and leaks | I bought this so I could be more productive in my office instead of staring out the window to watch for hummingbirds constantly instead of working. While the picture is great, the motion detector is way too sensitive (and I have mine on low sensitivity) and I get notifications every few minutes all day (basically any time there is a breeze since ours isn't close enough to any foot traffic from our house), plus it drains the battery. I bought a different shepherds hook so I could stabilize it more with an additional hook attachment. While this stabilized it and I received less notifications, it also caused the nectar to leak out since it was on a slight tilt (an incredibly slight tilt at that). I changed the stabilization method to a twist tie that holds it slightly steady and doesn't put it on a tilt at all, but it is still leaking all over, which makes me think it must just be a product defect. The battery is also draining even faster than it did when I first got it and I was receiving more notifications, so I'm not sure what is going on. I also bought the regular bird feeder that Soliom makes that comes with a solar panel. I have yet to set it up, but I'm hoping it doesn't have the same issues. I'm hoping that at least with the solar panel, it won't drain the battery as fast as my hummingbird feeder one is. I'm just bummed because I'm outside of the return window and on top of that, I'm constantly filling mine back up after it leaks everywhere and makes a sticky mess, and the battery is draining even faster now (maybe heat makes it drain faster? I did buy a sunshade to go above it though, so who knows). I was debating getting the pro plan for my Soliom feeders to help adjust the sensitivity because I heard that you can make it so it only records birds and eliminates all the other notifications from breezes, but I don't want to spend the money if I'm not getting any hummingbirds to the feeder. Our hummingbirds are visiting my hanging baskets, but not this feeder. I'm pretty bummed. I did message customer service to inquire about that but it is my understanding I need to purchase a package of some sort for it to record longer. I thought with the SD card in it, it might record longer but it does not unless there is a setting I am unaware of. It does contain an ant moat at the top, which you just put water in the top of the feeder, so when the ants climb into it to try and get to the hummingbird food they can't.It does hold a good amount of hummingbird food, but on hot days you should change it more often as it will spoil.The battery life seems pretty good. I made it a week before I had to charge it, but I'm sure it will go longer if I can figure out how to get it to record just my Hummers and not the leaves blowing in the tree. As I stated in the beginning of my review I received this as a gift, as I would not have purchased one for myself due to the price. They offered me my money back. I accepted the offer (April 8) and since then nothing. Two other emails, one had to do with putting honey in a dish and set by the feeder to attract the bees (???) and the other one just a canned response that had nothing to do with my problem.Anyway, I dinged the stars. I will admit that I get a few pictures of hummingbirds. They are great pictures, but between a good hummer picture, I get 99+ nothing pictures and notifications. Also the battery doesn’t last long. I have to charge the battery every 2 or 3 days.Again, I want to stress that the hummingbird pictures that I get are really lovely. It’s just the overzealous motion detector that is a problem.And the last 2 weeks it’s the battery life that seems to be a problem.But more than that, it’s the support … they need to back-up the ‘money back’ or not bother sending the offer.ORIGINAL REVIEW:This was very easy to get set up and ready to use. I charged and tested it when I received it last month. Worked great, but it was time for the hummingbirds yet.Over the weekend I checked the migration map and saw that there were hummers in our area. I filled the feeder and hung it outside.No hummers yet … but the motion detector sends me notifications ALL THE TIME !! Even a little breeze gets a notification. So far today I have deleted around 500 notifications. And these motion notices have nothing to do with a person or animal walking by. The motion is the breeze moving the birdhouse / camera. I just can’t believe that it was designed this way.It’s too late to return (today is the deadline and too late in the day to return it) so I will have to keep it.I have my setting correct for low motion sensor. Have gone thru all of the other setting. I did schedule SLEEP mode during the night so I wouldn’t have a lot of notifications to delete in the mornings.I have a Bird Buddy camera that works great and I don’t get notifications all the time, only when there is a bird on the feeder. This is how I expected this one to work.Anyway, I dinged a couple of stars for this reason. They gave me some suggestions on how to stabilize the feeder and also offered my money back or a new feeder. I chose a new feeder. This new feeder / camera seems to work better and the motion detector appears to be less squirrelly! I have secured it better and I’m not getting the constant notifications about new videos and having to constantly delete the videos.They also sent me a solar panel to use with it! This should work great not having to charge the battery as often.Again, this camera takes great pictures of the hummers. Excellent video quality.
