It only records when it detects motion and possibly sound to. I'm not sure about the sound, but I think that was an option. You can also always view the live feed from the app anytime. The camera is always in a standby mode so it don't use very much power until the detection or live view. I've had this camera for about 2 months now and I've never had any issues with the battery life or anything about it really. I've had a couple other camera's before I purchased this one and all the others were not solar. This one seems to be the best of any of them. I wish I bought this camera before I did the others. Just remember to fully charge the camera with the included USB before installing and that will help set your battery life.
