The camera will only record when you press the record button on the app. If you get a notification that motion has been detected, you check the app and view in real time what caused the notification. If you see something in real time, press the record button to have proof of what it is that caused the notification. The light and siren only turn on at night if a human is detected; however, the siren is not very loud. The camera itself does not turn on the video recording on automatically. If it is something unusual, I will press the record button to activate the camera to record whatever it is. Most of the time I get a notification and see that it was just a bird flying around the camera. If the motion detection is set from 5-10 then anything that moves will set off the notification, then you can record whatever trigged the motion detector. I set my camera between 1-5 so I don't get too many notifications from birds flying around or the wind blowing tree branches nearby. It is still a great camera to have for monitoring the area for whatever may trigger it just to have peace of mind.
