So it was technically on, but so quiet you couldn't hear anything. I would first try to adjust the volume while on a call and make sure it hasn't just gone very low. After raising it to a louder level a few times, ours stopped dropping each time. It does something similar when you first put the headphones in where it will go to the volume you last had the headphones set for rather than the current volume set on your phone. If that isn't the issue, it may be a connection thing. I would try forgetting the device on your phone and then reconnecting. If that also doesn't change anything, you may have a defective unit. These cancel the noise better than those. I've used these several times while snowblowing, and I had no trouble hearing them at a reasonable volume so I'd say it will likely work very well for reducing the noise from your lawnmower. It's worth noting that these have 3 different noise cancelling modes too. If you turn the noise cancelling on, it does a really good job blocking a lot of outside noise completely, and greatly reducing the volume of very loud noises. For instance, with this mode on, I can't hear my bathroom fan at all, nor can I hear anyone talking to me unless they're right in my face. I use this mode to block the noise from my snowblower, and it works really well. You can also turn active noise cancelling off, then these are just passive earplugs and you'll hear more outside noise. I assume you'd use this mode when you need some hearing protection, but don't want to use as much battery. It won't do a great job blocking loud noise, but it will make it quieter. To be honest, I never use this mode. Finally, there's 'transparent' mode that purposely lets outside noise in. It's basically the opposite of noise cancelling.
