The first thing you have to do is download the app and activate the device and pick a cell plan. Also, as soon as you turn it on it checks two things, cell signal, and the Moultrie server (indicated by two led lights). If you weren't interested in remotely viewing the pictures or being immediately notified of movement this might not be the camera for you. On a side note, I picked the cheapest plan $8.99 a month and I've never come close to the 1000 photos allocated. The camera doesn't miss a thing, and it's weathered some nasty rainfall over the last few months.
