Start out by charging it by electrical outlet, then hook it up to the solar panel. Without the solar panel the charge lasts months, so the solar panel simply extends or eliminates the charge cycle. In my case, the battery has never run out with the solar panels supplemental charging - even in winter. If you are worried about snow, simply mount the solar panel low enough to clean it off.
