So they have to be flat on the wall. The problem was, that the mount, when extended, the camera sticks out 10" from where I really wanted it. I thought I would place it on the side, but the movement is limited as it only folds 90 degrees and does not work well for that positioning. I looked at other Eufy cameras where you just mount to the wall and can freely position the angle you want, tighten it and you are set. No idea why these are different. I didn't try them, I'm looking for other options as I do want the 24/7 recording.
