I haven't tried the Bose version, but the reviews I've read for them didn't paint a stellar picture of this new format.When I saw Soundcore's version, I thought this should be an easier (less expensive) way to try out the new style. And I already have some experience with Anker's other earbuds, so I know they're a solid, reputable company. Needless to say, I had reasonable—if not high—hopes for these.Build quality, presentation, and general reliability are what I've come to expect from Soundcore products: more than good enough. These are a budget item (just barely), and they stand up very well against other budget products in this category.The fit is finicky. Even with the instruction "booklet" you'll need to experiment to find your right fit. I tried these in basically every position up and down the edge of my ear. For me, the best fitting and sounding option was about 2/3 down the ear with the buds turned inward just slightly. This provided a secure fit (even without the additional spacers), and the most optimal sound. On fit alone, these are 5 stars. I could probably wear these 2 hours at a time and not be bothered. I also like that these allow almost 100% of your surrounding sounds into your ears, which is the primary function of this design.The controls take some getting used to. In my opinion, Apple has mastered touch/tap controls, and most budget earbuds have a hard time matching that. Once you memorize which ear does what, and how many taps it takes, and where to tap, you'll be fine.But for me, the main star of the show should be sound quality. And even though these are more about fit and access to your surroundings than they are about sound, the way your media sounds is still important, right?For me, these are just too tinny and hollow sounding to use for music. In all but the quietest environments, you just can't enjoy most of the frequencies—least of all, bass. Now for podcasts, YouTube videos and the like, these are probably going to be good enough for everyone. They won't get very loud, and the experience is not immersive at all. But if you just want to listen to a podcast while you're out for a walk, and remain aware of your surroundings, these are going to be just right.Finally, the cost. At $70, I feel these have too much competition to be a slam dunk of a recommendation. I have them on now and I don't feel them unless I think about them. After about 3 to 4 hours wearing them, my ears feels a little sore and have to take them out and put them after a while. I was hoping, in time, this may go away. I do wish they have a bigger size for bigger ears.I listen to mostly audio books and YouTube video, so sound quality is not really that important. To start off, there is no bass even when you put the soundcore app on "bass" setting. I left it at 3D as I found it best for human voice (audiobooks). The feeling is really odd when I have it on as it is like someone standing next to me and reading me the audio book. I can still hear everything else around me. This is exactly what I needed.The battery life is out of the world. I usually have it at around 50% to 70% and I have not seen the buds' battery level drop below half at the end of the day when I put them back into the case. I have to charge the case after about 4 days as the LED light turned red and app shows it is empty. I wish the case would show you the battery level so you don't have to look into the app to see it. Also the case battery level does not update the app until you put the buds back inside the case.The capacity button is pretty useless. I practice and practice and still hit/miss rate is like 50/50. I don't even have any hair covering my ears. I've been curious about their functionality, but have stayed away because, until now, I had only seen offerings from cheap "no-name" brands. With this example from Anker/Soundcore, the brand recognition combined with the attractive design of the C30i finally conviced me to try. I think they'll be an excellent set of open earbuds for a very small subset of people; a subset which unfortunatelly does not include me.FitI don't have particularly large ears, but they're certainly not small. For me, the C30i are uncomfortable to wear for a couple of reasons: 1- The middle of the earbuds (the narrow piece that connects the front and back "bulbs") pushes my helix forward, applying mind pressure to that area. 2- The earbuds are hard plastic, and there is absolutely no articulation to them (they are always the shape you see in my pictures) -- my ears are thick enough that the earbuds fit very tightly even without the included ear grips; this leads to a mild, throbbing pressure within two songs of wearing the earbuds, a pressure that increases the longer I use them (imagine clamping a clothespin to your ear). To add insult to injury, the above fit issues leave prominent red marks on my ears that remain visible for several minutes after removing them.SoundI was right to trust Anker/Soundcore in the sound department. The sound profile of the C30i is about as good as I've heard out of air conduction earbuds in this price point: rich highs and mids, respectable bass (for air conduction), and even a bit of sub bass. Unfortunately, when combined with the aforementioned fit issues, the only way I can experience the sound I've just described is by pushing my ears slightly forward -- if I don't do this, the "sound output" ports of the earbuds fire in the wrong direction, and the sound becomes mainly highs with muddy mids and almost no lows. So, during normal wearing conditions (i.e.: while NOT holding my ears), they are not enjoyable at all.In short, if you have ears that are naturally-angled properly and are the right size, thickness, and shape to match the design of the C30i, you will probably love them.
