Gimmicky, But It Works |
One of many available "birdcam" feeders, this unit is a little garish with its orange and white color scheme. It works as advertised, although to get some of the more advanced features such as exclusion/inclusion zones you have to pay extra and subscribe to the "premium" service via their app. The app itself is rudimentary. The feeder will notify you when a bird has been detected and supposedly uses "AI identification" to tell you what species you're looking at. I couldn't get that particular feature to work, so it could be part of the "premium" package.The feeder itself comes with both a Velcro strap and a metal bracket for three different mounting options. Pairing the camera with a phone was something of a pain, since the camera now shipping with the feeder has all of its ports and the power button hidden under a silicone flap on top, which is not what the instructions tell you. The camera uses a Lithium Ion battery that can be powered either by the two solar panels on top or with a 5W USB-C connection. You choose which power method you're using in the app. Filling it with birdseed is NOT ergonomic at all. The top unclips and swings back to reveal the top of the seed bin, which is very narrow and easy to miss unless you take the feeder down and come in from behind. Camera quality is good.This product is probably no better or worse than most of the other "smart" feeders out there. They all seem to be very similar or the same, so shopping by price or what's on sale would be the thing to do if you're in the market for one. |
