Huge reservoir! Hard to clean. Not a gift for your mom (unless you like tech support) |
This has the largest reservoir for any humming bird feeder I have when you include the column and base together, but to fill the column it takes 2 cups. The problem is that the column is really hard to clean! With the space in the middle for the camera, you can't get a brush all the way in. WHEN mold starts happening in there, you are stuck. No way to clean it out.Setting it up was not too difficult when following the directions other than it said there was an update for the camera available but It did not seem to want to update. Kept waiting for the camera to wake up? The camera was working… what more do you want? So I ignored that and later I tried again and it updated no problems.I am a fan of the camera. The image is decent, I love the port protection. A big plug to access the on/off switch and the memory card, and a smaller one for the solar panel cord.The app is OK. It is a bit confusing, really trying to push you to purchase cloud storage. But I don't think that is necessary, but they make it seem like it is. I think they automatically started a free trial for cloud storage, but I never asked for it. I am honestly not sure, I would not have signed up until I had a chance to see what was available without it. I have a memory card in it, so that should be good for me. I DO want the bird identification, which is supposed to be free, but they imply it needs the cloud storage to use… which would not make it free. However, the bird identification is not great. It identifies there is a bird.. But has yet to correctly identify the hummingbirds in my area as they come for a visit. It identifies something, just not the correct bird.I have recorded many bird visits, but how to get the recording so I can share it, is HARD. Trying to review past recordings in HARD. Just trying to see what is going on right now is hard. The default motion detection/alert is WAY TOO sensitive. I mean it triggers on wind moving the feeder! It tells me it deters non-bird critters, but there is no video of this, and I am positive, no non-bird visitors.The design is solid, the quality of the gear is great, The software and the up-sell is horrid. I can recommend it with the huge caveat that you better be prepared for upsell pressure. I would NOT give this to my Mom, even if she would love it, because of how much pressure and confusion that causes not just in what is needed, but how to get to and look at what you want to. I am a technology-savvy person, but this bothers me. |
