Overcome by wasps/bees inside the feeder |
At first I really enjoyed using this hummingbird feeder with a camera. There were a number of hummers that came to visit it in the early morning and evenings and even sometimes during the day, that is until the wasps and bees discovered it. I had to remove the nectar from the feeder. The holes in the flowers are so large that the wasps and bees have no problem getting in. They go all the way through the tray into the holding tank, which surrounds the camera. There were at least 20 of them under the mushroom top today alone. I have to flush them out.The design for the nectar ports needs improvement. Smaller holes with some sort of mesh that keeps little crawlies out, yet allows the hummingbirds to have access for their long and slender tongues. If the wasps/bees couldn't get to the nectar there would be no reward for them. No reward, no hanging around competing with the hummingbirds. Which have started visiting the feeder less frequently I suspect because of the aggressiveness of the wasps/bees. It's too bad too because even though I had some things that I wish were different with this feeder overall I still liked it very much, but not being able to use it because of its design is a deal breaker for me. Disappointing.I will try putting nectar in it again in a couple of weeks to see if any wasp/bees return, but I suspect they will because they are also attracted to the nectar. I'm giving it a 3 star review because it is likely usable for someone else that doesn't have an issue with wasps/bees, but with a better port design I don't think it would have been an issue at all because they wouldn't have been able to get inside the holding tank in the first place. |
