Amazing Overall Quality and Variety of Parts - But the fluid runs out of the flowers in minutes |
PRODUCTAPILAB Hummingbird Feeder with CameraREVIEWOverall it is really well made, and I love all the spare parts, cleaning brushes, and a variety of colored flowers to attract different hummingbirds. The hummingbirds in our area like the basic Red / Yellow coloration, so there was nothing needed to swap out. The camera is well protected inside the feeder.MAIN ISSUE: My main reason for removing 2 stars is that for whatever reason, the premade mixture we have from the store just runs right out of the flowers on the feeder. In only about 45 minutes, the feeder is 95% empty. In general the flower openings are just too large, that is where all the fluid is running from. We will experiment more, but if the flow rate stays a problem, then it is not usable as is. It is a shame because everything else is top notch.SETUPThere is a very good user manual, and the setup steps were easy to follow.NOTE: As stated in the description you do have to have a strong WiFi 2.4Ghz network signal to the feeder. The feeder does not support WiFi 5Ghz. I was able to download the app, and register the feed in a few minutes. (I do have an outside the house WiFi Repeater so my signal is strong)The included Solar panel is separate from the feeder. So you will have to find a place / way to mount it. In my case I has a slim piece of wood that I mounted the solar panel to, then I zip tied the solar panel to my hanging hook. I don't love the look of a dangling wire from the solar panel, but I can see it as a necessary compromise instead of directly attaching it to the feeder.There is a slot in the camera for an extra SD card. I put in a spare 64GB card I had laying around but it is technically not needed since the camera uploads images to the cloud automatically. It was able to quickly detect the card and format it.TIP: Turn the quality setting to HD for the recordings for best picture.THE APPThe app is fine, it works well for remote viewing of the feeder. It will try to upsell you a subscription to various features (like live bird identification, storage and more), just tell it "no thanks" and continue on.NOTIFICATIONS: The notifications are too sensitive, so I turned them off. Even in low setting a gentle breeze was triggering dozens of motion alerts. Here is another slight diminishing mark on an otherwise good product. With notification turned off (because of all the false positives) it really means you will have to skim through all the recordings manually to find one that has your hummingbird pics. Our hummingbirds have a pretty regular schedule so once they find the feeder it should be easy enough to scan a few recordings to find a nice movie.RECOMMENDATIONFor now, until we find a way to minimize the drips, I can't recommend the feeder. If we find a solution, I will update my review accordingly. |
