Excellent camera, unreliable software, terrible support |
There are really two things to review here: one is the camera, and the other is the smartphone app that provides the link between the camera and the user.The camera, which is made by Hawkray, is brilliant. It provides wonderful, hi-resolution images, and is very adequately powered by the solar panel that comes with it. It is well designed to be weather resistant, and so far, at least, seems to do an excellent job of keeping moisture out.But the software, in terms of a smartphone app by O-Kam, is another story. And it appears that you are stuck using that app with this camera. The instructions that come with the camera tell you to download the O-Kam app, and don't give you any other options. And the problems with the app are manifold.The way it's supposed to work is as follows. When the camera senses motion within its wide-angle view, it begins a 10-second recording. (That's the default setting, although the recording time can be lengthened or shortened.) The recording is then saved to the micro-SD card that the user has installed in the camera. (The SD card is not included -- you have to supply your own; the alternative is to use a cloud-based storage service for which there is a monthly fee.)The trouble is that there are many false positives: recordings made when no motion at all is apparent. There are also missed positives: movements that occurred within the camera's view that don't get recorded. Furthermore, the app's operation is sluggish. Often videos that have been recorded take a long time to play, or don't play at all. Then at other times they display promptly and beautifully. You just never know.The documentation provided is minimal and not always helpful. There is no user manual that tells you what all the functions of the app are or how to activate them. And the customer support is prompt, but feckless. Here's an example. I wanted to find out how to pair a second phone with my camera, so both my wife and I could access the videos that the camera recorded. So I wrote to the Hawkray support desk and asked for help. Their response was that she should install the app, open an account "and then pair her own account with the camera." Since what I wanted to know was precisely how to pair a different account with the camera, this didn't really help. I wrote back to let them know how unhelpful their advice was, but also mentioned that I had, all on my own, discovered the "Share" screen on the app which provided me with a QR code that my wife could scan, using her phone, which would pair her phone with the camera. Their response: "YES, loading the QR code on my phone, and then using my wife's phone to scan that QR code." I was so pleased to be told that the method I had already successfully used was, indeed, the right one. But why couldn't they have told me that in the first place? Clearly there are some translation issues involved (the help desk seems to be in China), but from the user's perspective the help offered is pretty feeble.So this is a mixed review. It's a terrific and affordable camera run by unreliable software with minimal documentation and unhelpful support. It's not useless, but I wish it were better. Maybe a future software improvement will come along and solve all these problems. But in the meantime, caveat emptor. |
