But …Sometimes it takes an hour or more to update location even when using the find dog option. Not good.In an urban environment it is easy to locate the dog. Street names are there and one knows exactly where they themselves are.But in forest Google Maps (their base mapping) shows green. An entire screen of only green with a dog icon. That is of no use.You can switch to satellite view which is better. Problem is that unless you really know the area and can identify something it is still useless. A satellite view of a pine forest pretty much looks the same no matter where you are.But even if you figure that out you still just have a satellite view with the dog somewhere. What is missing is my location! You need to know on the map where each the dog and yourself are so that you have a good direction and as both move you can tell if you are getting closer or not.Without that it is still useless. Essentially you need close to realtime for yourself and the dog so you can track her down.I have tried a competitor and it allows you to show yourself and the dog at the same time and updates fast. It is criticized for going through batteries rapidly and they are not all wrong. Price you pay for more rapid updates with two icons.I have not used the new one enough to declare it perfect but already I know it is functionally better for non-urban use.Please remember I am discussing non-urban. I bet many people are happy who live in a city. Interface is excellent and features are abundant.But if you hike in woods I’d suggest something else.
