Great battery life, annoying software. |
It's looking like the battery is going to last months. It's been on 3 minute mode for over a week, and still shows 100% charge. The tracker I had from Spytec lasted 15 days and inside the protective case was twice the size.The software is a somewhat crippled version of google maps. I can't seem to get it to display common landmarks like restaurants, but it shows gyms, churches and dentist offices whether I want them or not. The traces I get are literally lines drawn position to position 3 minutes apart. It's all they promised, and it's suitable for my needs, but I can't help wondering how the device keeps track of the satellites without taking some intermediate positions that could easily be sent in a burst every three minutes. Seems if you want accurate traces you have to pay for more pulses and reduced battery life.The stops can only be seen by viewing an "historical playback" or by generating a position report. No idea why, but the position report takes a full minute to create, even with fewer than 20 positions. After that I can click on each position to get additional info and a link to google maps with the exact location. I use the position report when the historical playback doesn't give me enough info.The stops on the historical playback contain an address, but no GPS coordinates. The address is not always correct, but I can click on the stop to get a zoomed in view of the location which is more reliable. This would be great if the map displayed common landmarks, but it doesn't. Instead I have to google the address to get close, then navigate to the location displayed on the other map. With just the address of a strip mall, it's impossible to tell if my employee is parked outside the grocery store or Joe's Tavern. Yes, I can use street view, but it doesn't snap to the location of the tracker, just the location of where the street view image was taken from. It's just not close enough.Overall this is a decent tracker with so-so software. The battery life alone makes it the best option for my purposes. Still, I give it just 3 stars for the annoying software. There is a link in the popup when I click on a tracker that opens google maps to the exact location complete with GPS coordinates. If they put that link in the popup I get when I click on a stop, I will revise with 4 stars. If they let me turn on/off common landmarks, I'll revise with 5 stars. |
